Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life's most precious milestones, and one of my favorite things about newborn photography is creating beautiful images without families needing to leave the comfort of home.

If you've never experienced an in-home newborn session before, you may be wondering what actually happens during those few hours. Here's a little peek behind the scenes.

Before the Session

As I plan out your session, I will review your questionnaire helping me plan colors, props and setups that fit your family’s style. My favorite is to coordinate colors with the baby's nursery. I like to send messages here and there to quickly check in and give updates on what I have planned.

I ask that you reach out to me within the first two days after birth so we can adjust your scheduled session, because babies are pleasantly unpredictable! Sessions are best to be done within the first 14 days after the baby's arrival and I am very flexible to timing.

I bring everything needed for the baby portraits, including wraps, blankets, posing fabrics, headbands, bonnets, and a small selection of props. Parents don't need to stress about having the perfect setup ready for me.

When I Arrive

The first thing I do is take a quick look around your home to find the best light for family images if you chose that package. This might be near a large window in the living room, nursery, or primary bedroom. I do bring a battery operated flash that I can use if necessary, I prefer to use that for the baby only posed sets.

Many parents are surprised to learn that we don't need a huge amount of space. The space in front of the couch is all we need to create beautiful images. I can coordinate a set up without a couch as well if necessary!

While I unpack and set up, parents can finish feeding the baby, gather siblings, or simply take a breath and relax.

Following Baby's Lead

Newborn sessions are never rushed, I follow baby and family’s cues whether we take photos for only one hour or three! Babies set the pace, and that's exactly how it should be.

We take breaks for feeding, diaper changes, cuddles, and soothing whenever needed. Some babies sleep through most of their session, while others prefer to stay awake and observe everything happening around them.

Both are perfectly normal, and beautiful images can be created either way.

Capturing Family Connections

One of my favorite parts of every newborn session is photographing the connections between family members.

The proud big sibling sneaking in kisses and hugs.

These moments often become some of the most treasured images from the entire gallery because they tell the story of this season of life exactly as it is.

The Baby Portraits

Once the baby is settled, we'll move through a few planned setups using wraps, fabrics, and simple props.

My style focuses on creating timeless images that keep the attention on your baby. Soft colors, natural textures, and gentle posing help create portraits that will still feel beautiful years from now.

Every pose is done with the baby's comfort and safety as the top priority.

A Relaxed Experience

The biggest goal of an in-home newborn session is simple: to make things easy for your family.

There's no packing the diaper bag, no rushing out the door, no worrying if the baby needs an extra feeding or cuddle, and no worrying about what your home looks like! No one will ever know there was a sink full of dishes in the other room.

You can stay comfortable in your own home while I document these fleeting first days with your newest family member.

After the Session

Once we're finished, I'll pack everything up and head home to begin excitedly but carefully editing your images.

I send a few sneak peek images within 48 hours and a few weeks later, you'll receive a gallery filled with tiny details, sweet connections, and memories from a season that passes far too quickly.

Newborns change every day, and it's an honor to preserve these moments for families to look back on for years to come.
